Wurlitzer opus 2139

A Measure of Worth

Dear Reader,

It is with great pleasure, and not a little anticipation, that I welcome you to the world of the cinema organ.

The Cinema Organ Society has served the needs of members for over 50 years, during which time it has maintained a positive and outgoing approach, not only successfully promoting the cinema organ to the public but also caring for these fine examples of our musical heritage.

One of the country’s foremost examples is the Society’s own 4 manual Wurlitzer, from the Trocadero Cinema in London’s Elephant & Castle.

Seventy-seven years after its original inauguration at the Trocadero, this musical giant is in need of a new home. As a reader of this there is a strong chance that you and your organisation could be a potential partner, assisting us to fulfill this important and worthy cause.

Such a proposition raises more questions than can quickly be answered. Nevertheless, we hope that these details will give you an idea of the nature of the project, its importance, and how it might be undertaken

In the section ‘A measure of worth’, you can read more about the background and the history of the organ, from its installation at the Trocadero to its latter years under the Society’s care. There are some pages detailing the musical resources of this unique instrument and some contact details. This is where our anticipation kicks in, that we may have whetted your interest sufficiently to find out more.

Welcome!

Simon Gledhill

Chairman, Cinema Organ Society.
